Every gun that comes in for a service is stripped down on the bench behind the shop, not sent away to a third party. On a shotgun that means the stock off, the action out, old oil and burnt powder cleaned from the bearing surfaces, the ejectors and cocking rods checked for wear, springs tested, the barrels looked through for dents, bulges, ring bulges and thin walls, and the wall thickness measured if there is any doubt at all. It goes back together, gets timed, gets oiled properly, and gets shut a hundred times before it goes back in the cabinet.
A standard service on an over and under or side by side takes around a week in normal weeks and longer either side of the season, because everyone remembers their gun in August. Rifles get the same treatment: bolt stripped, lugs and locking recesses checked, trigger unit cleaned and the pull weight measured, bore scoped, moderator baffles cleaned, and the action screws torqued back to where they should be. Air rifles get seals, springs or O-rings, a fresh charge on a PCP and the power checked over a chronograph so it goes back to you legal and consistent.
Repairs we take on regularly: broken firing pins, weak or broken mainsprings, ejector work, top lever and hinge pin wear, dented barrels raised, loose ribs, cracked heads and hand pins, recoil pads fitted, chequering recut, and stock refinishing in oil. If a gun needs reproofing after work, it goes to Birmingham and we handle the paperwork. If something is beyond economic repair we will tell you that first, before you have spent money finding out.
